Hooked on School Days – Saint John

When Nick joined the Sea Dogs he was motivated, focused and excited, not just about the season but about his future. My first discussion with Nick about life after hockey had no ambiguity – he told me he wanted to be a welder and he wanted me to help him figure out how to make that happen. Nick had taken welding in High School and loved it. He had chosen welding as his career path.

High School, CEGEP and University are fairly straightforward options for our players. While we had often considered some professional development programs like personal training and technology, I had never been asked to develop a program of study in the trades. In fact, I wasn’t sure even where to start. But Nick was persistent, he knew what he wanted and he was willing to work to get there.

Together we found a union sponsored online series of professional welding courses. Together we prepared a proposal for the league. The program of study was approved and Nick started his first course – a short Math course. Since then he has taken above the average number of courses per semester. He has done well and is preparing to write preliminary certification exams in certain areas. By the end of his QMJHL career Nick will have completed the course component and be ready to begin the practical requirements for his professional welder certification.

Congratulations Nick! Perseverance and focus certainly pays off!
