Ultramar Player of the Week: Yvan Mongo

Boucherville, Que. – Yvan Mongo (Voltigeurs | Drummondville) has been named the Ultramar Player of the Week following the QMJHL’s second week of action. Mongo’s eight regular season points moved him into the second spot of the league’s top scorers, largely helped by the seven points he cumulated over his two games last week.

In Drummondville’s 6-3 win over Chicoutimi this past Friday, Mongo stood out with an assist in the opening period and a power play insurance goal in the middle frame. He ended his night with an impressive +3 differential, and nearly a 60% success rate in the faceoff dot.

On the following day, Mongo once again dazzled his fans with a strong showing. In an 8-5 win over the Drakkar, he ended the game with career personal bests of four helpers and five points. He once again displayed an impressive differential with a +4, and dominated faceoffs by winning 20 of his 26 draws.

Suiting up for Blainville-Boisbriand last year, Mongo ended his third full season in the QMJHL with a career best 29 points. Now with a total of eight points in only four games played to begin his first campaign with Drummondville, it certainly is realistic to predict the 19-year-old will top his personal bests over the 2017-18 season.

Other players considered for this week’s Ultramar Player of the Week are; Jordan Martel (Drakkar | Baie-Comeau) and Dereck Baribeau (Remparts | Québec). Martel didn’t let two away games slow down his performances; he cumulated two goals and five assists over the weekend, and added a game-winning shootout goal to top it off. As for Baribeau, he was the week’s most dominant netminder by allowing a single goal in a 3-1 win on Friday, before shutting out Gatineau 3-0 on the next day.

Ultramar Player of the Week 2017-18:

Sept. 21 – Sept. 24: Simon Lafrance (Foreurs | Val-d’Or)
Sept. 25 – Oct. 1: Yvan Mongo (Voltigeurs | Drummondville)
