Ultramar Player of the Week: Émile Samson
Boucherville, Que. – The Ultramar Player of the Week is Émile Samson (Armada | Blainville-Boisbriand) who garnered a 0.979% save percentage as well as a 0.50 goals against average throughout his two games last week.
Samson has been unbeatable in front of the net since the playoffs began, going 9-0 in the Armada’s current run. As the semifinals began this past week, Samson made sure to show up for the occasion. He got things started on Friday by making 20 saves to secure a 3-1 win over the Charlottetown Islanders. His stellar performance was recompensed with the first star of the game.
The following day, Samson made 28 saves in order to shutout his opponent in a 1-0 win for the Armada. Once again, he earned himself the first star of the game, with a performance that put his team up 2-0 in the series with the next game taking place on Tuesday, in Charlottetown.
The second win of the series marked a 23rd consecutive game without a regulation loss for the 19-year-old goalie, a streak that he has maintained since well before the playoffs started. In fact, Samson hasn’t lost a game within the 60-minute timeframe dating back to December 10th.
With such excellent work between the pipes, the rookie goaltender has earned himself the playoffs’ top spot for goals against average with 1.73, surpassing previous leader Evan Fitzpatrick (Titan | Acadie-Bathurst) who currently sits at 1.99. Samson is also only one win behind the Titan goaltender in the current playoff campaign.
Other players considered for the Ultramar Player of the Week are forward Antoine Morand (Titan | Acadie-Bathurst) and goaltender Matthew Welsh (Islanders | Charlottetown).
Morand had five points in two games last week, four of which were accumulated in the same game. The 18-year-old forward’s four-goal performance against the Victoriaville Tigres on Saturday saw him tie a team record for most goals in a game during the playoffs.
As for Welsh, he only allowed four goals in two games last week against one of the most dangerous offensive powerhouses in the league. Despite losing both games against the Armada, he was awarded the second star for both of his stellar performances after turning aside 49 of the 53 shots he faced over the weekend.
