Screaming Eagles Announce 2016-17 Final Roster
Sydney – The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles announced their final roster for the 2016-17 season today. The roster consists of 24 players including 13 forwards, nine defensemen and two goaltenders.
The roster is comprised of 16 veterans and eight rookies. Of the 16 veterans, 13 are returning players, while the remaining three were 18-year-olds acquired through trades. The newly acquired players include defensemen Marcus Tesink, forward Anthony Beauchamp and forward Tyler Hylland who was acquired along with a 2018 fourth round pick, during the QMJHL trade deadline today from Blainville-Boisbriand, in exchange for Luke Henman and 2018 fourth round pick.
Among the eight rookies, are six QMJHL draft picks and two CHL Import draft picks. Three of the six QMJHL draft picks were selected in 2015 including – 18-year-old forward Drake Batherson (fourth round) and a pair of 17-year-old defensemen Sacha Roy (second round) and Alexis Sansfacon (second round). The remaining three picks were drafted this past off season during the 2016 QMJHL Draft, featuring Screaming Eagles first round selection goaltender Kevin Mandolense, third round pick defensemen Adam McCormick and fourth round pick forward Olivier Bourret.
During the 2016 CHL Import Draft, the Eagles drafted Russian Vasily Glotov and German defensemen Leon Gawanke. The 5’10”, 168 pound, forward who was drafted in the first round by the Eagles, played last season in the Russian Junior Hockey League (MHL), where he finished fourth overall in league scoring – 23 goals and 32 assists in 42 games. Additionally, Glotov, 19, was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres #190 overall at the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, and will be attending the Sabres training camp in September. Gawanke, 6’01”, 178 lbs native of Berlin, Germany, was selected by the Screaming Eagles 96th overall during the CHL Import Draft. The 17-year-old defensemen played last year in the German U19 Junior Hockey League, while recording 11 goals and 25 assists in 42 games.
The Screaming Eagles currently have four 20-year-old players remaining on their training camp roster including defensemen Duncan MacIntyre, Oliver LeBlanc and forwards Massimo Carozza and Giovanni Fiore. Two of the four twenty’s will be attending NHL training camps in a couple weeks, Olivier Leblanc will be heading to Arizona for the Coyotes camp, while Giovanni Fiore will attend his home town team Montreal Canadiens training camp.
The roster is made up of four 20-year-old players, seven 19-year-olds, five 18-year-olds, five 17-year-olds and three 16-year-olds, for an average age of 18.2.
