Quebec Major Junior Hockey League

A victory for their longtime fans

Fans, new and older season ticket holders, billets and members of the organization wearing the Olympiques jersey presented one by one the 2012-2013 players edition. A video compiling the best memories of the team featured Claude Giroux, Maxime Talbot and many other former players.

Benoit Groulx’s men had a shaky start. Sherbrooke over played them for the first twenty minutes. Disoriented, the Olympiques had a lot of turnovers in defense. Two of these errors turned out in goals for Michael McNamee and Alexandre Comtois.

The Olympiques must have received a few words from their coach before the second period. They were a transformed team for the rest of the game. With a second effort, Taylor Burke scored a shorthanded goal for Gatineau. The co-captain also had an assist on the first goal of Adam Chapman.

Vincent Richer, who played the spoilsport for Sherbrooke all night, broke the tie. He also dropped the gloves against Samuel Courtemanche.

During a power play, the Czech and Slovakia delegation joined their forces to put the record straight. The rookie Martin Reway scored on an assist from Tomas Hyka.

The third period was an offensive festival for the Olympiques to honor their former name, the Hull Festivals. Chapman started the ball rolling by scoring his second of the night. Phoenix replied, but the number 23 had not said his last word. Chapman deflected a puck to complete his hat trick.

Midway through the third period, the 3341 fans held their breath when Tomas Hyka had lost his.  A bad fall head first into the boards was the source of this anxiety. Hyka remained on the ice a few moments before retrieving to the locker room and not come back.

Yannick Dubé and Gabriel Bourret sealed the victory by scoring their first goal of the season.

There was a lot of intensity, even forty years after the first confrontation between the two cities.  Could this be the beginning of a rivalry that will start back?
