Voltigeurs win first President Cup title

DRUMMONDVILLE, Tuesday, May 12, 2009 – The Drummondville Voltigeurs, who finished in last place in the standings in 2007-08 and established a new CHL record with a 79-point turnaround this year, held off the Shawinigan Cataractes to win the first President Cup title in franchise history in front of a sellout crowd at the Marcel-Dionne Centre.

Yannick Riendeau opened the scoring for the Voltigeurs on a three-on-one break at 10:38 in the first period. The winger was the recipient of a beautiful pass from line-mate Mike Hoffman. He made no mistake, converting his opportunity by beating goaltender Gabriel Girard on the blocker side. A few minutes later, Riendeau returned the favour, feeding Hoffman, who gave Drummondville a two-goal advantage.

The Cataractes cut the lead in half early in the second period thanks to an Alex Grant goal, but the celebration was short-lived as Yannick Riendeau gave the Voltigeurs their two-goal lead back ninety-two seconds later. Shawinigan quickly battled back, making it 3-2 following a push by Matthew Pistilli, who was credited with his 13th goal of the playoffs.

The story in the third period was goaltender Marco Cousineau, who made several amazing stops to clinch the President Cup title. He pushed away a total of 45 shots during the contest.
