Jarrett Baker (Cape Breton Eagles), Adam McCormick (Cape Breton Eagles) and Jordan Spence (Moncton Wildcats) are the three nominees for the 2019-2020 best defensive defenseman award.
The Kevin-Lowe trophy has been awarded annually since 2004-05 and is named after the Quebec Remparts alumnus who played in 1,254 NHL games with the Edmonton Oilers and the New York Rangers. Kevin Lowe is also a seven-time NHL all-star defenseman and a six-time Stanley Cup champion.
Jarrett Baker just finished his fourth year in the QMJHL and his first season in an Eagles uniform. The Black Rock, NS native scored six goals and added 33 assists in 59 games while maintaining a shining +27 plus-minus rating.
His teammate, Adam McCormick, has been the image of consistency in the 231 games he’s played over a four-year major junior career with the Cape Breton Eagles. The 19-year-old from Woodstock, NB registered three goals and 30 helpers in 50 regular season games. He also registered an impressive plus-minus ratio with a team best +45.
Jordan Spence has been a rising star since he debuted in 2018. Born in Cornwall, PEI but raised in Japan, the Los Angeles Kings prospect earned the QMJHL Rookie of the Year award in 2018-19 following a stunning debut season in which he piled up 49 points. He hasn’t slowed down since, collecting nine goals and 43 assists this season while posting a remarkable +49 rating, the best differential among all QMJHL blueliners.
