The latest Ultramar Player of the Week is Baie-Comeau Drakkar winger Ivan Chekhovich. In three games last week, Chekhovich scored four times and added four assists, helping lead the Drakkar to a 2-0-0-1 record.
Last Wednesday night at home, Chekhovich netted his first goal of the season as part of one of the more impressive offensive performances of the young season. The 19-year-old from Yekaterinburg, Russia would finish the night with five points, including his second career QMJHL hat trick, in a decisive 9-3 victory over the Shawinigan Cataractes. He also named the game’s first star.
Travelling to Gatineau on Friday night, Chekhovich and his Drakkar teammates would skate out of the Robert Guertin Center with a 3-2 decision over the Olympiques. The third year forward would once again find the back of the net, his fourth goal in two games, while being named the game’s first star for the second consecutive contest.
The following night, the Drakkar made their way up the St. Lawrence for an encounter with the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. Chekhovich was once again a force in the match, racking up a pair of assists in what would prove to be a 4-3 shootout loss to the Armada. Nonetheless, the Drakkar earned a single point thanks to an impressive late game rally, scoring twice in the game’s final two minutes to force extra time. For the week, the San Jose Sharks draft pick was involved in an impressive 53% of all goals scored by his team.
Thanks to his recent offensive outburst, Chekhovich now leads the QMJHL in scoring with 11 points. Additionally, the Drakkar hold down first place overall in the league standings. Chekhovich was selected third overall by the Drakkar in the 2016 CHL Import Draft and has been a model of consistency in his first two QMJHL seasons, recording 119 points in 125 regular season games entering this season.
