The QMJHL is teaming up with local mental health and suicide prevention agencies to raise awareness about mental health

January 17, 2018, Montreal – The QMJHL is partnering with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), l’Association québécoise de prévention du suicide (AQPS), and the Centre de prévention du suicide au Québec to raise awareness about the importance of mental health during games from January 20th to February 23rd.

The awareness campaign is part of the ongoing commitment by the QMJHL, the Canadian Mental Health Association, the Centre de prevention du suicide au Québec and l’Association québécoise de prévention du suicide to implement Talk Today. Talk Today provides mental health support to players and raises awareness about mental health and suicide prevention throughout communities across the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The Talk Today program is an added benefit for players who have been able to count on mental health support since 2009 when the League created its Players Help Program.

All 18 QMJHL teams will be hosting a Talk Today awareness game with the support of their local mental health and suicide prevention agencies. Games will feature a kiosk where fans can get more information regarding local programs and services offered in their communities. There will also be public address announcements regarding the importance of positive mental health, along with mental health awareness messaging delivered through social media.

A key piece of the Talk Today program has been to inform and educate players about mental health and suicide prevention. Every team has received a mental health workshop specific to suicide prevention.

Talk Today is an excellent program which will enable us to offer added support to our players by educating them on the importance of mental health. Our teams have also taken part in these workshops and it will help them remain attentive to any troubling signs. The program will work in conjunction with our Players Help Program which was created by the League in 2009. I am very pleased with this new association,” said Gilles Courteau, Commissioner of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

“CMHA would like to commend the league and its teams for their commitment to promoting mental health. By participating in TalkToday, they are helping educate athletes and their families about mental health, and encouraging them to talk about it openly. Mental health is everyone’s concern” said Geneviève Fecteau, Executive Director, CMHA Québec Division and Montréal Branch.

“The Suicide Prevention Centers in Quebec are pleased to partner with the QMJHL to host Talk Today events to increase public awareness and to promote mental health and suicide awareness. Talking about mental health will help combat stigma and encourage young people to seek help when they need it,” said André Houle, Executive Director of Centre de prévention du suicide 02 for the RCPSQ.

“To reduce suicide deaths and promote good mental health, the commitment of all actors in society is essential. Thanks to the proactive approach of the QMJHL, we show athletes and fans that daring to talk about their difficulties can help them find the comfort and help that may be needed in difficult times. It is a sign of strength. Talking about suicide saves lives,” said Jérôme Gaudreault, Director General of AQPS.
