Daniel Sprong, Antoine Samuel and Mikhail Denisov were named today the three stars of the week for the period from February 6th to 12th, 2017.
This week’s first star is Charlottetown Islanders forward Daniel Sprong. In two games, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ prospect scored five goals, for a total of six points, maintained a +5 rating and was chosen the first star of the game after both of his games. Last Friday, in a 4-3 win against the Halifax Mooseheads, he scored two goals. The next day, he registered a hat trick and finished the game with four points in a 9-0 victory at the hands of the Drummondville Voltigeurs. He is now only two goals away of the 100-point-plateau in regular seasons in the QMJHL.
The second star of the week is awarded to Baie-Comeau Drakkar’s goaltender, Antoine Samuel. The 19-year-old goalie won his two starts with a 1.00 goals-against-average and 0.963 save percentage, blocking 52 of the 54 shots he faced. Last Wednesday in Victoriaville against the Tigres, he was named the first star of the game in a 3-1 win, collecting 34 saves. Then, against the Val-d’Or Foreurs, he stopped 18 of the 19 shots to allow his team to win 7-1 in front of their home fans. With these two victories this week, the Drakkar joins the Phoenix at the 16th and last rank giving access to the playoffs.
Shawinigan Cataractes goaltender Mikhail Denisov is the recipient of the third star of the week. In three games, the 18-year-old goalie showed a record of 2-1-0-0, both wins earned by shutout. He was the team’s starting goaltender in all three games in the Maritimes. After a tough night in Bathurst, the goalie stepped up with two shutouts in a row. Saturday, he blanked the powerful Sea Dogs, ending their win streak as he makes 25 saves. Sunday against the Mooseheads in Halifax, he stopped all 28 shots he faced en route to a 1-0 win.
