Our 18 | The 2022-2023 Rimouski Oceanic

Things are on the rise in Rimouski. Following last spring’s first-round postseason upset of the Saint John Sea Dogs, a balance of solid veterans and up-and-comers has the organization quickly making a move towards achieving contender status yet again.

They’ll be making that move with five of the club’s top seven scorers from last season, including hometown boy Luka Verreault. Joining him will be winger WIlliam Dumoulin along with centers Alexander Gaudio and Jacob Mathieu. A trio of rookies from last year’s squad, Maxime Coursol, Mael St-Denis and Alexandre Blais, will be looking to break out while overager Xavier Fillion, acquired from the Quebec Remparts during training camp, will provide experience and depth up the middle. Rookie Jan Sprynar has impressed during camp after averaging over a goal per game in the Czech U17 ranks last season.

Defensively, the leader in all three zones will be 2022 Boston Bruins draftee Frederic Brunet. He’ll be at the center of a defensive corps rich in both size and budding experience as five members of this group stand 6’3” or taller and six have at least one full season behind them. Mathis Gauthier is back for a third campaign while Luke Coughlin, the fourth overall selection at the 2021 QMJHL Draft, aims to build off an impressive rookie year. As for Simon Maltais and Charles Cote, they will be a force in their own zone.

Between the pipes, the duo that made Rimouski one of the top defensive squads in the league last year, Carolina Hurricanes draftee Patrik Hamrla and Gabriel Robert, are back for another tour of duty.

With Serge Beausoleil back for another campaign as Head Coach and GM, the stingy reputation of this group should not change as it achieves more and more success. The only question now isn’t if the Oceanic will take the next step, but how big that step will be.
