Our 18 | The 2021-22 Gatineau Olympiques

In every sense of the word, the script for this year’s edition of the Gatineau Olympiques has the word “transition” stenciled all over it. Not only is the club making their move from the venerable Robert-Guertin Centre – their home for the past 48 seasons – it’s doing so with a roster bursting at the seams with young, exciting talent.

It’s expected that the forward group will make it tough on the opposition in all three zones, a trademark of all Louis Robitaille coached teams. One of the leaders in that regard will be 2021 Vegas Golden Knights first rounder Zachary Dean. Antonin Verreault prepares to take his game to the next level after averaging nearly one point per game in his 16-year-old season. Team captain and 2021 Arizona Coyotes draftee Manix Landry returns for a fourth season in Gatineau, while German winger Haakon Frederik Hanelt prepares for his first taste of the “Q” after being selected by the Washington Capitals in the fifth round of last summer’s NHL Entry Draft. Veteran center Mathieu Bizier and rookie winger Julien Paillé, both of whom have impressed early on in training camp, will be among those rounding out the forward lines.

Keeping the puck out of their own net should be a doable task with an impressive defense corps and goaltending tandem shaping up in Gatineau. Isaac Belliveau looks forward to his first full season with the ‘Piques after hearing his name called but the Pittsburgh Penguins at the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. Joining him are 2020 QMJHL first overall pick Tristan Luneau, San Jose Sharks prospect Evgenii Kashnikov and savvy third-year veteran Olivier Boutin. Behind them, the duo of overager Remi Poirier and Emerik Despatie will provide a formidable last line of defense between the pipes.

As the organization prepares to open up for business at the brand new Slush Puppie Centre, there’s little doubt the fans will be no less impressed with the product on the ice this season.
