Our 18 | Another year, another step for Remparts

Going into last season, the Quebec Remparts made a firm commitment to a long-term build. The result? A team that hit upon a number of promising prospects, stayed competitive through many games and had a few long nights mixed in. Overall, a decent result. Now, the time has come to see how the club progresses from those early returns.

Though Patrick Roy’s squad loses its top scoring forward (Anthony Gagnon) and defenseman (Darien Kielb) via graduation, a trio of veterans in center Theo Rochette and wingers Pierrick Dube and Thomas Caron return to provide both an offensive impact and, in the case of Caron in particular, an element of physicality.

Combined with a pair of freshmen standouts from last season in James Malatesta and Cole Cormier, the Remparts expect to feature a top six that will be tough to beat most nights. An overager from Ontario, Hunter Holmes should step into a more prominent role after recording 20 points in 38 games during his first QMJHL campaign. Winger Viljami Marjala, the 14th overall selection at the 2020 CHL Import Draft, is slated to make his way to North America after registering a point per game with the Finnish Under-17 and Karpat Under-18 programs last year.

The blueline in Remparts camp currently accounts for just four goals scored in the “Q” last year. A trio of 18-year-olds, Nicholas Savoie, Edouard Cournoyer and Romain Rodzinki, will be thrust into the spotlight further along with one of the “elder statesmen” of the back end, Dylan Schives.

Arguably the most anticipated debut on the entire roster will come from rookie Evan Nause, who was selected fifth overall in June’s QMJHL Draft. This after originally going sixth overall to the Val-d’Or Foreurs in the 2019 Draft and making the USHL All-Rookie Team with Sioux Falls. In nets, the club will rely on 20-year-old Thomas Sigouin, acquired from Sherbrooke in June after a fantastic first full season as a backup goaltender with the Phoenix.

With the youth movement in full effect for the second straight year, the expectations will be ratcheted up in Quebec City. How this group responds to those increased demands will most certainly determine its ultimate fate.
