SAINT JOHN – The Saint John Sea Dogs couldn’t solve the Shawinigan Cataractes in Thursday’s lone Quebec Major Junior Hockey League contest in front of 3,239 fans at Harbour Station.

Michael Abbott scored his first Sea Dogs goal and Jakub Izacky added to his team lead with another as Saint John dropped their second straight. Sebastien Auger made 23 saves on 26 shots in the loss as Saint John fell to 20-33-1-0.

Frank Schumacher, Frédérick Gaudreau and Phil Pietroniro responded for the Cataractes as Marvin Cüpper won his third against the Dogs this season with a 32 save performance. Shawinigan climbed to 14-34-5-2.

It was nearly halfway through the first before the game saw it’s first goal. Schumacher made it 1-0 Cataractes at 8:52 on a 3-on-1, the only scoring play of the period.

Shots in the first were 11-8 for Saint John.

The Cataractes extended their lead to 2-0 on a goal by the captain Gaudreau. His shot trickled past Auger at 6:56.

Oliver Cooper started to throw his weight around, leveling Raphaël Maheux in the corner of the offensive zone with about 5:30 left to play in the second, his second hit of the game.

In the third, Abbott fired a bullet from the point just as one Shawinigan player stepped back onto the ice as his penalty expired. Still on the power play, Stephen Anderson found Abott alone on the point where he teed up his first as a Sea Dog at 7:16.

Just under nine minutes later, at 15:58, Izacky started and finished the play to get the Sea Dogs and Cataractes knotted up at two goals each. Izacky grabbed the puck and fed it to Jurij Repe, who fed a streaking Pierre Durepos the puck. The captain headed straight to the net and Cüpper made the initial save before Izacky followed up and banged home the rebound.

Less than two minutes later however, at 17:14, Pietroniro scored to make it 3-2 Shawinigan, giving the game its final score.

The final shot count was 34-26 in favour of Saint John.

The Moncton Wildcats are next up for the Sea Dogs. Tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. the Rivalry Cup series continues at Harbour Station. Tickets are available at the Harbour Station box office, by phone at 657-1234 and by heading online to
