Daniel Sprong breaks franchise records in opening weekend of playoffs

Charlottetown, Islanders

Daniel Sprong’s one goal and five assists in the opening weekend of the 2017 QMJHL Playoffs, presented by Roland Tours, was exactly what the Charlottetown Islanders needed to take a 2-0 series lead.

Sprong and linemate Alex Dostie currently lead the entire league in playoff points with six each.

Sprong also broke a few franchise records this past weekend.

He now has the most playoff points among any player who wore the Montreal Rocket, P.E.I. Rocket and/or Charlottetown Islanders jersey with 37.

Cory Urquhart was the previous holder of the record with 33 lifetime points.

Sprong’s six points this weekend tied and, eventually, passed the former Montreal and P.E.I. Rocket player.

With his five assists this past weekend, Sprong also passed former Islander Brad Kennedy for the lone franchise record in assists.

Sprong and Kennedy were both tied at 16 heading into the weekend. Sprong now has 21.

If you’re keeping score at home, Sprong is closing in on yet another franchise record.

He is just two goals shy of matching the franchise record, currently held by Urquhart, who has 18.

Sprong’s one goal this past weekend was his 16th.

Will Sprong catch and pass this record too? If he does, he will hold all major playoff franchise records.

Sprong’s opportunity will come sooner than later, as the Islanders take on the Drakkar in Baie-Comeau in games three and four (and possibly five) this Tuesday and Wednesday.
