Over the years, Kevin has showed initiative to support patients at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. He partnered up with teammates Egor Sokolov and Kyle Havlena to use their own stipends to purchase games tickets for Pediatric patients to attend home games. This gesture gives the community’s sickest children a break from hospital visits for some fun with their families.
He’s also contacted Bauer to have green-coloured goalie gear made for him to wear during the team’s annual Irish Jersey Game. The game worn equipment was raffled off and contributed to a grand total of $15,466 raised for the Cancer Patient Care Fund, which provides financial assistance for illness-related travel expenses, medication and more.
The past year has confirmed that Kevin’s character and kind heart are two of his greatest strengths. Since joining the Eagles in 2016, Kevin has been billeted by Ryan and Jennifer MacPherson, as well as their children Boyd (6 years old) and Ella (17 months old).
In April 2019, then just five months old, Kevin’s billet sister Ella was diagnosed with a rare genetic bone condition called osteopetrosis. As a result, Ella and her parents needed to relocate to Toronto for months for her to receive her bone-marrow transplant. During this time, Kevin acted as Boyd’s big brother, helping him cope and maintain some normalcy during a very difficult time.
Kevin’s tribute to Ella confirmed he is the right nomination for this award as he once again turned to Bauer to help create special goalie pads honouring her during her battle. Since then, Mandolese’s yellow pads proudly adorn an “All for Ella” crest on the side.
