SAINT JOHN – The Saint John Sea Dogs and Rouyn-Noranda Huskies clashed in the first of two games for Saint John this weekend. The Sea Dogs ended their streak with a 6-5 shootout win over the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Friday night.
Stephen MacAulay had a power play hat-trick while Devon Oliver-Dares and Oliver Cooper added singles for Saint John while Huberdeau scored the shootout winner. Auger made 27 saves on 32 shots in his ninth consecutive start and added another three stops in the shootout.
Sven Andrighetto had two and Jean-Sebastien Dea, Gabriel Desjardins and Dillon Fournier scored in response for the Huskies while Alexandre Belanger made 31 stops on 36 shots.
The Huskies opened the scoring as Dea extended his goal-scoring lead with his 15th goal of the season at 2:45.
Desjardins gave the Huskies a 2-0 lead at 6:06 and Andrighetto made it 3-0 at 11:12.
Oliver-Dares gave the Sea Dogs life with his first of the year with 2:47 to go in the first, blocking a clearing attempt and sliding the puck between the pads of Belanger to make it 3-1.
MacAulay continued the Sea Dogs comeback with another power play goal with his third of the season at 19:42 of the opening frame. MacAulay grabbed a Gagne rebound and banked it off a Rouyn defender in front to beat Belanger for his third of the year.
The Sea Dogs late first period success carried over into the third with much of the action taking place in the Rouyn end.
Saint John drew even at 3-3 on a strange play with Cooper and Ryan Tesink at 10:59. The two Sea Dog forwards got tangled up with a pair of Huskies defenceman and ended up on a partial break. Tesink kept the puck until the last second, leaving Cooper with an open net.
The second period would end with the teams tied up.
Fournier broke the deadlock 5:47 into the third.
Just over a minute later, the Sea Dogs knotted the game up at 4-4 as MacAulay scored his second of the game over the left shoulder of Belanger right off the faceoff.
Andrighetto made it 5-4 Huskies at 7:27 with his second of the game.
MacAulay completed the hat-trick with a beautiful tip in off a Gagne shot to keep things interesting with 5:04 to go. Huberdeau notched his second assist on the play.
The game would remain tied through the rest of the third and overtime, bringing out the shootout to decide a winner.
Huberdeau scored the lone shootout goal as Saint John’s first shooter and Auger stopped all three shots to give the Sea Dogs two points.
