The P.E.I. Rocket broke a 1-1 tie in the second period scoring twice on route to a 4-1 win over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan Saturday night in pre-season action at the Charlottetown Civic Centre.
Matej Beran led the way for the Rocket with two goals and an assist. The Rocket have evened their pre-season record at 2-2-0 with two games left before the regular season.
Ben Duffy, who tallied a goal and an assist, said the team played well and stayed disciplined.
“That’s what we have to do. When we’re five-on-five we are going to be a hard team to beat.”
The 20-year-old Sackville, N.S. native has been practicing with the team for a week and a half and played in his first game since March. It took a period to get back into the groove, said Duffy.
“After that I felt great and it was a lot of fun out there.”
Being a young team again this season, Duffy said the team’s identity will be hard working and an ‘in-your-face’ type of style.
“We’re not going to give any team any edge out there and we are going to be really hard to play against.”
The Rocket opened the scoring on the powerplay with Beran’s first of the game. Alex Micallef drew the line assist. The Titan responded with a powerplay goal of their own at 17:14 from Patrik Zdrahal.
Beran added his second of the game 1:23 into the second period to give the Rocket a 2-1 lead. Duffy increased the lead to 3-1 at 8:09.
In the third period, second-overall pick Alexis Pepin gave the Rocket a 4-1 lead at 11:04.
Rocket netminder Antoine Bibeau started the first two periods making 20 saves. Maxime Lagace played the third period making six saves.
Jacob Brennan made 24 saves in goal for the Titan.
The Rocket are in Moncton to battle the Wildcats on Friday Sept. 14. The Rocket then play their final pre-season game at home Sunday Sept. 16 at the Charlottetown Civic Centre at 2 pm.
The regular season opens Friday Sept. 21 when the Rocket host the Halifax Mooseheads.
