A five-goal effort by the Halifax Mooseheads in the second period was too much for the P.E.I. Rocket to handle in an 8-1 loss to the Mooseheads Sunday afternoon.
Jonathan Drouin led the way for the Mooseheads with a goal and four helpers. Nathan MacKinnon had a pair of goals and assists. Alex Micallef had the lone goal for the Rocket who drop to 1-1-0-0 on the season.
“We looked a little slow out there and the effort wasn’t there at all. We were soft on pucks and it showed,” said Micallef.
Mooseheads opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal from Ryan Falkenham at 5:30. The Rocket replied with a goal from Micallef at 7:16. Mooseheads took the lead with another shorthanded goal, this time from MacKinnon at 10:47.
Micallef said he can only blame himself for Halifax’s two shorthanded goals.
“I was on for both of them…I took the accountability for that. It took the wind out of our sails right away.”
Jonathan Drouin scored 19 seconds into the second period to give Halifax the 3-1 lead. Brent Andrews and Matthew Boudreau added goals 55 seconds apart mid-way through the frame for a 5-1 Mooseheads lead. MacKinnon’s powerplay goal at 15:01 and Stefan Fournier’s goal at 18:11 made it 7-1 Mooseheads.
Antoine Bibeau replaced Maxime Lagace in goal to the start the third period. Trey Lewis scored at 18:34 to round out the scoring.
The loss just has to be shaken off, said Micallef.
“Keep working hard in practice, work twice as hard, and start off Friday fresh.”
Zachery Fucale made 20 saves in goal for the Mooseheads.
Lagace stopped 20 shots in two periods. Bibeau turned away 18 of 19 shots in the third period.
The Rocket is in Bathurst Friday night to battle the Titan for a 7:30 p.m. start.
