Day 2 of Training Camp
Team White Takes Win On Day 2
By Nolan Reid
The P.E.I. Rocket hit the ice again this afternoon in Pownal for the second intra-squad game between Team White and Team Red.
Team White skated away with a 6-5 overtime victory on a goal from tough-guy Patrick McGrath. After overtime, a shootout was added where Team White increased their win to 8-7.
Victor Provencher opened the scoring for Team Red in the first 15-minute period. Moments later, Alexis Pepin tied the game for Team White. Defenseman Ryan Graves scored on a penalty shot to give Team Red a 2-1 lead.
In the second period, Jared Dodman gave Team Red a 3-1 lead before Team White’s Antoine Venne cut the lead to 3-2. Daniel Perigo and Carl Chenier added goals for Team Red for a 5-2 lead after two 15-minute periods.
Team White came within two goals with McGrath’s first of the game. Patrick Levesque made it a 5-4 game before Louick Marcotte tied things up at 5-5 late in the game.
McGarth had the overtime winner re-directing a point shot past goaltender Chris Gallant.
After the overtime, the teams skated to a shootout where Antoine Venne and Alex Chenier-Allard added two more goals for Team White. Kevin Laliberte, Nathan Yetman and Alexis Pepin were all stopped in the shootout. Team Red had shootout goals from Mark Trickett and Daniel Perigo. Carl Chenier, Deverick Ottereyes and Alex Boily also shot but did not score.
Antoine Bibeau, Jeremy Gallant and Jonathan Boutin shared the win in net for Team White. Raphael Roy, Charles-Oliver Lajoie and Chris Gallant shared the loss in net for Team Red.
Trickett of Team Red, who the Rocket selected 24th overall in the second round at the draft in June, said the team played pretty good.
“We competed hard. We kind of slowed down there at the end, thought we had it, and they came back and took it on us.”
So far, Trickett says he sees a good all-around team.
“There’s a few grinders, few scorers. It is going to be good I think.”
Trickett was looking forward to training camp since he was drafted in June, he said.
“I couldn’t wait and finally it came. It’s been good.”
The teams hit the ice again tomorrow at 2 p.m. for the third and final inter-squad game. On Friday, the team will head to Saint John for the first exhibition game at 7:30 p.m. and then will return to Pownal for a rematch at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Dwyer Happy With First Few Days of Training Camp
By Nolan Reid
After only two days of players being on the ice for training camp, P.E.I. Rocket Head Coach Gordie Dwyer likes what he has seen so far.
Training camp began on Monday Aug. 13 in Pownal with player registration and fitness testing. Players then hit the ice on Tuesday Aug. 14 and again today.
A lot of the younger players have done a good job in the first few days, said Dwyer.
“And the veterans have come in with the right attitude of wanting to be better than last season. The first couple of days have gone well.”
This year, the Rocket have a total of 22 players attending a Quebec Major Junior Hockey League training camp for the first time.
With strong goaltending this year, Dwyer said the team feels they will be able score some goals and they want to get better defensively.
“That’s what all signs are pointing to right now.”
The younger players have to come into training camp to make a name for themselves to earn a spot on the team, said Dwyer.
“They were all recruited for certain reasons and it’s up to them to show their best and show that they can play at this level. I think a lot of our guys have done a good job of that so far.”
Training camp resumes tomorrow in Pownal at 2 p.m.
