MONCTON N.B. – The Moncton Wildcats win in a thrilling fashion last night at the Moncton Coliseum 5-4 over the Sherbrooke Phoenix! It was an electric building with 4915 strong until the end to cheer their home team to victory. Waite was in nets for Moncton with a star performance, turning away 45 Sherbrooke shots in the win!
McKenna got the first Cats goal at the six minute mark of the opening frame to give the home team some early momentum, assists on the goal went to Capannelli and Tessier. The Wildcats would strike again, with a goal by Anthony Wojcik, his fifth of the season to give the Cats a 2-0 lead. By the end of the first Sherbrooke managed to notch one to make the Cats lead 2-1 after the first 20 minutes of play.
As the second unfolded, each team would add one more to the scoreboard, with the score sitting at 3-2 heading into the final frame. The third turned out to be a little more exciting than the Wildcats would have liked, but managed to come up strong in the final minute with the win!
With time winding down in the third, Sherbrooke missed on their pass attempt and the puck landed on Renaud’s stick, making no mistake he found the empty net to make the score 4-2 Moncton with less than two minutes remaining. It would seem as though it was a sure win, but Sherbrooke responded to shock the crowds. With two back-to-back goals at 19:09 and 19:31 the Cats found themselves in a tie game with 30 seconds remaining. Just when it looked like things might go to overtime, Julien Tessier came through for the Cats with the game winning goal at 19:41 to seal the game, 5-4 would be the final for Moncton!
The Cats head out for a three game Quebec road trip next week and will not be back on home ice until March 15th when they take on the Saint John Sea Dogs at 7:00 p.m.
