Welsh, MacEwen and Fitzpatrick named the three stars of the week
BOUCHERVILLE, Monday, January 2nd, 2017 – Matthew Welsh, Zack MacEwen and Evan Fitzpatrick were named today the three stars of the week for December 26th, 2016 to January 2nd, 2017.
Matthew Welsh, Charlottetown Islanders goaltender, is the first star of the week. He won both games he started at home while keeping a goals against average of 1.50 and a save percentage of .960. He was also named the first star in both games stopping a total of 72 of the 75 shots he faced. Against a divisional rival on Friday, he made 42 saves in a 3-2 victory over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. The Islanders are in fourth place in the standings, 3 points behind the League leaders.
The second star is awarded to the Gatineau Olympiques’ forward, Zack MacEwen. The 20-year-old veteran scored 3 goals, added 4 assists in 3 games this past week. He also had a great week in the faceoff circle, winning 64.4% of the draws he participated in. Wednesday, against the Val-d’Or Foreurs, he accumulated 3 points in a 7-4 win. He also got 3 points on Saturday, this time in an 8-3 win over the Quebec Remparts.
The Sherbooke Phoenix’s goaltender, Evan Fitzpatrick is the third star of the week. He finished the week with a goals against average of 2.02 and stopped 113 of 119 shots for a save percentage of .950, winning 2 of the 3 games he started. He had performances of 39, 39 and 35 saves against Drummondville (in a 4-2 win), Gatineau (in a 5-1 win) and Shawinigan (in a 4-2 loss).
