Ultramar Player of the Week: Peter Abbandonato

Boucherville, Que. – The Ultramar Player of the Week is Peter Abbandonato (Huskies | Rouyn-Noranda). In a mere two games, he managed to collect seven points, consisting of five assists as well as two goals. The Huskies ultimately won both their games last week, tying them for fourth in the league with 66 points, the same total as the Drummondville Voltigeurs.

Abbandonato got the wheels turning on Friday, as he scored the first goal of the game to set the pace for his team, following up with a pass on the game-winning goal in a 4-1 win over the Victoriaville Tigres.

Keeping in line with his previous game, the 19-year-old forward netted the first goal of the game once again on Sunday against the Val-d’Or Foreurs, good for his 15th of the season. He also added four assists, giving him an impressive five-point game while the Huskies triumphed over their division rivals in a decisive 10-1 victory. The team also surpassed its previous high for shots on goal in a game, setting a new franchise record of 63.

Abbandonato also proved that he was quite effective in the faceoff circle, winning 20 out of the 32 puck drops he participated in, good for a 62.5% conversion rate. He also had a +7 differential for the week. The forward currently has 51 points in 49 games, posting totals of 15 goals and 36 assists. With just under 20 games left to play in the regular season, Abbandonato is well on his way to surpassing his career-high of 56 points, set last season.

Other players considered for the Ultramar Player of the Week are forward Alex Barré-Boulet (Armada | Blainville-Boisbriand) and defenseman Nicholas Welsh (Wildcats | Moncton).

Barré-Boulet had a productive week, scoring four goals and obtaining three assists in his two games played. He’s had six games of four points or more this season, as well as currently being on an eight-game point streak. He’s had an explosive new year, collecting 25 points in just 12 games for the month of January, giving him the league lead with 87 points.

Nicholas Welsh obtained six points in three games last week. He scored one goal, collected five assists and skated away with a +3 differential. His 37 assists tie him for first in the league among defensemen. He is also fourth among defensemen for points, with 47.
