Ultramar Player of the Week: Pascal Aquin

Darrell Theriault

Boucherville, QC – The Ultramar Player of the Week is Pascal Aquin (Islanders | Charlottetown) who helped his team find three important wins last week all while accumulating six goals and one assist.

Following a loss to the Québec Remparts on Monday, the Islanders needed a win in game seven of the series to move on to the next round. Aquin stepped up and took over on offense, scoring four goals and allowing his team to stay alive in the playoffs with an 8-3 victory over the Remparts. In doing so, Aquin set new personal bests for goals and points in a game, as well as being awarded the first star for his outstanding performance.

With the second round underway, the Islanders took on the Halifax Mooseheads on their home ice. The first game of the series went to overtime and Aquin once again stepped up and delivered the game-winner. The next day, the Islanders doubled their series lead on the Mooseheads with a 7-4 win in which Aquin scored a goal and collected an assist. His team now heads back to Charlottetown with a 2-0 lead as well as the home ice advantage.

The 20-year-old forward is currently dominating the playoffs in scoring along with fellow teammate Keith Getson. Both forwards have eight goals in their current run. Not only has Aquin had his most productive season to date in the QMJHL, but his playoff profile is just as impressive, managing eight goals and three assists in just nine games.

Other players considered for the Ultramar Player of the Week are forward Mitchell Balmas (Titan | Acadie-Bathurst) as well as goaltender Matthew Welsh (Islanders | Charlottetown).

Balmas played two identical games last week in order to obtain two wins over the Sherbrooke Phoenix in the second round of the playoffs. He scored two goals and collected an assist in both of the 5-1 victories. The Titan is now up two games and heads to Sherbrooke looking to keep its streak alive.

Welsh played his team’s four games last week, winning three of them as well as facing an average of 38 shots per game. He had a 3.15 goals-against-average as well a 0.917% save percentage. The 18-year-old goalie also made 47 saves in the Islanders second victory over the Mooseheads on Saturday, the most he has ever recorded in a playoff game in his QMJHL Career.
