SAINT JOHN – The Saint John Sea Dogs took on the Val d’Or Foreurs at Harbour Station in front of 3,821 fans, dropping a 7-1 decision in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Saturday night.
Stephen MacAulay scored the lone Sea Dogs marker while Alex Fournier made 9 saves on 13 shots in his first QMJHL start. Sebastien Auger replaced Fournier at the start of the second period and made 17 stops on 20 shots. The Sea Dogs fell to an even 5-5 in the loss.
Anthony Mantha had a hat-trick, Anton Zlobin added a pair of goals while Vincent Dunn and Michael Beaudry added singles for the Foreurs with Francois Tremblay stopping 25 of 26 between the pipes.
Mantha took control of the first period early, scoring the first two goals of the game, both unassisted at 5:34 and 7:57. He completed the natural hat-trick at 8:30.
Zlobin made it 4-0 Val d’Or at 10:10.
Kevin Gagne had the best chance for the Sea Dogs late in the first after making a great move to deke around the Foreur defenceman and snapping a shot labeled for the top corner. Tremblay stood tall, robbing Gagne of the chance.
Auger came in to replace Fournier at the start of the second, and his arrival was followed by a number of excellent saves.
After MacAulay’s first marker was called off due to a blown whistle, Marcus Cuomo had the best chance of the period sitting right on the doorstep.
Play then headed the other direction and Zlobin notched his second of the game at 12:40.
The Sea Dogs broke the goose egg with 5:05 remaining in the second as MacAulay was in front of Tremblay to slide one past him on a beautiful feed from Jonathan Huberdeau.
The third period saw the Foreurs extend their lead with a goal by Dunn at 4:43 with the man advantage.
Beaudry added a goal at 10:19 of the third to make it 7-1 Foreurs.
The Sea Dogs embark on their first Quebec road trip on Wednesday. The Quebec Remparts are up first on Wednesday night. Fans can catch the game by tuning in to Tim Roszell on News 88.9 FM or the QMJHL TELUS webcast.
