To some people, David Kelly is just the equipment manager of the Saint John Sea Dogs. But to many others, he represents much more than that.
And while his nickname may be one of the shortest ones around – D.K. – his smile, his charisma and his aura are undoubtedly very large.
On the night of November 9, 2017, DK reached a very important milestone in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League – he took part in his 800th game as the Saint John Sea Dogs’ equipment manager.
While the feat itself is quite remarkable, it becomes even more of a success when you add in one simple fact; David Kelly has now been battling cancer for the past few years.
Although the illness doesn’t take away from the prestige of hitting the 800-game plateau, it certainly contributes to DK’s inspiring story. The positive attitude and go-getter mindset Kelly has shown throughout this challenging period have helped him inspire not only the entire Sea Dogs organization, but the rest of the league as well… and pretty much everyone he’s come across since!
In the name of the entire QMJHL family, we’d like to congratulate DK on the amazing accomplishment and obviously wish him nothing short of the very best as he continues to march on.
Dr. Jacob and the little monkey…
As Kelly was in the hospital receiving treatments for his cancer, his nephew Jacob came to visit him one day and gave him a special gift; he placed a monkey-covered Band-Aid on his wrist to help cure his “boo boo”.
Kelly decided to keep his Band-Aid on throughout all of his chemotherapy treatments and to this day believes it’s Jacob’s gift that helped him get through some of the toughest times he’s faced.
In order to raise funds for the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation and other local charities, a website was recently created by Kelly and his close ones in order to sell apparel branded with the monkey Band-Aid.
