Mantha, Clapperton and Power named the TELUS three stars of the week

Photi Sotiropoulos

Anthony Mantha, Christopher Clapperton and Marcus Power were named today the TELUS three stars of the week for September 23 to 29, 2013.

The first star of the week is awarded to Val-d’Or Foreurs forward Anthony Mantha. The first round pick of the Detroit Red Wings recorded 3 assists last Wednesday for a +/- of +2 in a 7-4 win  against the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. On Friday, in a road game in Blainville-Boisbriand, he was named the third star of the game with an assist. Saturday, in an 11-2 win against the Quebec Remparts, he scored 4 goals, on only 8 shots, for a total of 5 points, which tied his career high in the QMJHL in terms of points and goals. For his exceptional performance he was named the first star of the game. Moreover, he is the 5th player in the history of the club to score 4 goals or more  in a road game (the record is still held by Jerome Bergeron with 5 in 2000-01). So far in the 2013-14 season, he has a total of 8 goals and 6 assists for a total of 14 points in 5 games, which places him in first place in the League scoring,  tied with Christopher Clapperton of the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada and Cameron Darcy of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.

Christopher Clapperton, the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada forward, with 2 goals and 6 assists in only two games is the second star of the week. Friday, in a 5-1 win against the Val-d’Or Foreurs, he scored his first goal of the week. Sunday, he scored another goal and added 4 assists for a total of 5 points and an 8-4 win against the Moncton Wildcats. The Armada (6-0) is still the only undefeated team in the QMJHL this season; to date, Clapperton has participated in more than half of the goals scored by his team (14 out of 27).

The third star of the week goes  to Marcus Power, the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies forward. The 20 year-old Newfoundlander helped his team win 2 of 3 road games this week. Wednesday, he scored a goal and added an assist against Val-d’Or. Friday, in a high-scoring 10-9 win for Rouyn-Noranda, he played his best offensive game in the QMJHL with 5 points of 2 goals and 3 assists in 9 shots and a +/- of +4. He ends the week with a total of 3 goals and 5 assists in 3 games played for a total of 8 points and a +/- of +5.
