Kielly scores in overtime to give Islanders a 3-0 series lead
Nicolas Meloche was ready to fire a shot on the Screaming Eagles net, but instead decided to pass.
That pass was to Kameron Kielly, who redirected the puck into a wide-open Cape Breton net, winning the game in overtime.
Kielly’s goal came at 4:11 of the extra frame and was assisted by Filip Chlapik, as well as Meloche.
The goal ended game three and gave the Charlottetown Islanders a 3-0 lead in their second round QMJHL playoff series.
Daniel Sprong, William Bower and Dillon Boucher scored the other Islanders goals.
Chlapik had three assists in the win. Kielly also had an assist in the win.
Mark Grametbauer is now 7-0 in the playoffs and stopped 32 of 25 in the win.
The game, originally scheduled for Tuesday night but was delayed due to a burst pipe under the ice, was certainly worth the price of admission for the 3163 in attendance.
Sprong opened the scoring with just 14 seconds left in the first period. His 6th of the playoffs came on the power play and was assisted by Chlapik and Kielly.
William Bower scored just 44 seconds into the second period with Alex Dostie and PO Joseph assisting.
Dillon Boucher made it 3-0 at 5:07 as he banged home a loose puck in a scramble in front of the net. Tyler MacArthur and Chlapik assisted.
The Eagles then stormed back. They scored at 12:09, 16:35 and 18:38 of the second period to make it a 3-3 game after 40 minutes.
There was no scoring in the third period.
Meloche’s beautiful setup to Kielly will put the Eagles on the brink of elimination on Thursday night at Centre 200.
