Quebec Major Junior Hockey League

Interesting numbers, weekend #9

Denis Demers

November announced the winter season, and also major junior teams at their best after 2 months of activity. The Baie-Comeau Drakkar, seeking a new record, certainly seems at its best, but it will face an opponent it fears, the Rimouski Oceanic ... And after 4 games on the road, the Halifax Mooseheads will return to their fans tonight. The overall leaders will host the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies at the Metro Centre, and try to win a 9th straight game at home.

TEAMS AT FULL THROTTLE

  • Baie-Comeau – the Drakkar has been playing its best sequence in 9 years, as it hasn’t lost a game in regular time for the last 13 games, the team record being 15 (Winter 2003). Players of Coach Eric Veilleux scored 38 goals in their last 7 duels, allowing only 11 in...
  • Moncton – the Wildcats found their stride recently, after starting below expectations. They just won 8 of their last 10 games. After defeating Rouyn-Noranda 8-3 yesterday, they’ll host the Val-d'Or Foreurs tonight at the Moncton Coliseum.
  • Chicoutimi – the Saguenéens just won their last 3 games. And yesterday they convincingly defeated the Victoriaville Tigres by a score of 7 to 2. Tonight, the Sags are playing against the Rimouski Océanic, a team they defeated 3-2 in a shootout last week, when their goalkeeper Julio Billia distinguished himself with 8 saves out of 9 shootouts. Chicoutimi has been imposed 513 penalty minutes, the most penalized team in the League…
  • Blainville-Boisbriand – the offensive Armada is at its best! Jean-François Houle’s team scored 21 times during its 3 most recent games (all victorious). The next opponent, the Voltigeurs tonight at home... And with a victory, the Armada (34 points) could even take the overall lead, in the event of a setback of the Mooseheads (35 pts) in Halifax. • Drummondville – the Drummondville Voltigeurs demonstrate character these days, and it pays off. So much so that the team led by Mario Duhamel took advantage of their last stay at home to win its last 3 games against Saint John, Acadie-Bathurst and Gatineau. During this period, their powerful play has gone at top speed, scoring 10 goals in 27 attempts, a success rate of 37%!

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE

  • Petr Straka (BAC) – scored his 20th goal 2 days ago; Josh Currie (PEI) and him have been the first of the season to reach this plateau, which happened on the same night. What a fast start in 2012-13 for this 20-year-old Czech forward; 31 points in only 17 games, he who amassed 5 for his team which won 7 to 1 against Shawinigan on November 14th. His +19 differential allows him to rank 3rd in the League, behind Darcy Ashley (HAL, + 20) and teammate Frédéric Gamelin (BAC, +19).
  • Jerôme Verrier (DRU) – the Voltigeurs energetic skater has played his best game in the QMJHL last night against Gatineau when he amassed 5 assists in a 5-2 win of his own team, while his teammate Olivier Archambault also scored 2 goals and 2 assists. A Drummondville native, Verrier already totals 27 points after 22 games, including 3 winning goals on his score card. During his last 3 games, he scored 10 points in addition to excelling on face-offs with a 68% efficiency.
  • Laurent Dauphin (CHI) – the Saguenéens rookie forward already plays an important role in the Chicoutimi clan with 24 points in 22 games. He leads his team for goals (11), game-winning goals (2), shorthanded goals (2), shots on goal (86) and powerplay points (10).
  • Sebastien Auger (SNB) – the  Sea Dogs goaltender is disarmingly calm when facing a shootout. He managed 6 saves on 6 shots this season, leading his team to 2 wins out of 2 possible.
  • Philippe Desrosiers (RIM) – he has been there 4 times during shootouts on behalf of the Rimouski Océanic, winning 2 of those games. The fact that he faced 29 shots in the shootout, making 23 saves, equivalent to a percentage of saves of .793 was impressive.
  • The "BIG THREE" Culkin / Carrier / Lefebvre – the best trio of offensive defensemen this season considering the number of points per game is the Quebec Remparts’; Ryan Culkin, Marc-Antoine Carrier and Martin Lefebvre amassed collectively a total of 44 points, an average of 0.86 points per game for each of these players. Also consider the Halifax defensemen (Abeltshauser, Gazzola and Weegar | 47 points | 0.81), PEI (Oligny Pavelka and Micalef | 47 points | 0.77) and Blainville-Boisbriand (Ouellet, Carrier and Picard | 47 points | 0.69)…

RECORDS

  • Philippe Cadorette (BAC) – his record streak of 10 consecutive victories has no equivalent in the history of the Drakkar. Previously, only Olivier Michaud managed 8 consecutive wins for the team, during the 2002-03 season. In Cadorette’s case, during the current sequence, he just put together 9 straight performances with a percentage of saves above .900.

ACTIVE SEQUENCE

  • Ryan Tesink (SNB) – scored at least 1 goal in each of his last 7 games with the Sea Dogs.
  • Alexandre Lavoie (CAP) – is listed on the score sheet in 13 consecutive games. And during this still active sequence, the Screaming Eagles forward amassed 23 points, an average close to 2 points per game!
  • Anton Zlobin (VDO) – will be looking tonight for a 16th straight game with at least 1 point, which is already the best sequence of its kind this season in the QMJHL.
