Interesting numbers, weekend #12

Denis Demers

Watch out for the New Wildcats! The Phoenix is on fire! Ben Duffy wants to write another page in the Rocket records’ book! Here are our interesting numbers for the weekend of December 7, 2012 !

TEAMS AT FULL THROTTLE

  • Moncton – The Wildcats continue to show their claws! Their seven-game winning streak since November 21st was quite convincing: 30 goals against and 12 allowed only; 6 of those wins were concluded with a gap of 2 or more goals. Their next opponent: the Tigres in Victoriaville tonight at 7:00 pm.
  • Halifax – The Mooseheads show an outstanding winning percentage of .857 (24 wins in 28 games). To put this in perspective, the record of the QMJHL in regular season is the 1970-1971 edition of the Quebec Remparts (.879), while the fabulous 2010-11 campaign of the St John Sea Dogs (.853) ranked 2nd. After two games on the road this weekend in Bathurst (Saturday) and Saint John (Sunday), the Mooseheads will return home on Thursday December 13 against the PEI Rocket, and will try to match their team record of 15 straight wins at home in 1996-97 established at the time of Jean-Sebastien Giguère, Alex Tanguay and Marc Chouinard...

  • PEI – The Rocket has produced offensively recently, and averaged more than 4 goals scored per game, allowing it to win its last 4 games. The team beat the Remparts twice in less than 96 hours, with 5-3 and 4-2 marks, on November 28th and December 5th! A big test awaits Gordie Dwyer’s troop at the beginning of the New Year, since it will play 8 of its next 11 games on the road. Attention Fans: purchase your tickets for local games on Sunday December 16th (SNB), Friday December 28th (MON), and that of Friday, January 3, 2013 (BAT).
  • Drummondville – The Voltigeurs just won twice in a row against the Armada, which gives them a sequence of 5 straight games without a loss in regular time. The "Volts" climb the ladder one step at a time (9th | 35 pts). They maintained a percentage of points earned per game of .773 since November 10th (17 points | 11 parties). The Voltigeurs are getting punished in a game (523 penalty min. | 6th most penalized, averaging 17.4 per game). But the aggressive style of play of Drummondville seems to bother his opponents, because it is against the Voltigeurs that other teams were the most penalized with 628 minutes on the bench (an average of 20.9 penalty minutes per game).
  • Sherbrooke – The young squad led by Judes Vallée has amassed 5 points out of a possible 6 since November 24th, period during which they scored 16 goals while allowing only 11. Facing Rimouski last night, the Phoenix turned a 3 to 1 deficit into a spectacular 4 to 3 win, which is a second victory in 2 games against the Océanic in less than 2 weeks. Tonight the Phoenix will play the Cataractes in Shawinigan; tomorrow, the 2 clubs will face each other again, in Sherbrooke’s Palais des Sports. See the standings to understand the importance of these 2 games for the 2 clubs to try and earn the 16th place in order to make the Playoffs. http://www.lhjmq.qc.ca/standings/show/ls_season/171/subtype/1

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE

  • Emile Poirier (GAT) – The top scorer of the club with 29 points including 16 goals, he has participated in 34% of the 85 goals scored in regular time by his club. In addition, the Olympiques forward does not rely on the power play to raise his points, having won 27 with even strength or shorthanded.
  • Alexis Pepin (PEI) – The 16-year-old rookie forward has had a very good start in the QMJHL. He was chosen 2nd overall in the 2012 QMJHL Entry Draft and has already amassed 13 points, including 8 goals in 29 games. With his big stature of 6'02 and 196 pounds, he is very involved in the game, which earned him an occasional visit to the bench, as shown in the number of minor penalties this season (19)!
  • Jeremy Beaudry (SHE) – The number of goals (11) he scored is the best total among defensemen. Let’s note that he was sent the front for a few games, and it paid off with 5 goals in 3 games!
  • Alexandre Bélanger (ROU) - after 10 consecutive games without a loss in regular time (9-0-0-1), the goal tender of the Huskies suffered his 1st loss Tuesday, against the powerful Wildcats 11 decisions. He dominates the rookie goal tenders with his average of 2.96 and save percentage of .893.
  • Danick Martel (BLB) – This 18-year-old rookie forward generates 100% of his offensive with even strength (19 points) or shorthanded (2 other points). He, who made the team without being drafted, shows a grand total of 21 points in 30 games, and a differential of +12.

RECORDS

  • Jonathan Huberdeau (SNB) – is 5 goals away from the Sea Dogs team’s record which is 108 goals in career (Michael Kirkpatrick | 2007-2011)

ACTIVE SEQUENCE

  • Charles Hudon (CHI) – As Beauvillier, he has been invited to the selection camp of the Canadian National Team for the 2013 World Junior Championship. He participated in the score in his last 12 games, scoring 19 points in this great sequence.
  • Jonathan Narbonne (MON) – This Wildcats defenseman amassed 10 points in 8 games; he will be looking for one point in a 9th straight game tonight against the Tigres, an exploit no other defenseman has achieved so far in 2012-13 ... Brisebois (ROU), Lamarche (BAC) and Sergeev (VDO) having stopped before 8.
  • Tomas Pavelka (PEI) – The recent success of the Rocket is no stranger to 6 points amassed by their defenseman in his last 4 games. In 27 games this season, his record is 5 goals and 20 assists.
  • Francis Beauvillier (RIM) – Has seen his sequence of 7 games in a row with 1 goal come to a stop yesterday against the Phoenix, while he spent much of the 3rd period in the locker room after being injured.
