Quebec Major Junior Hockey League

Interesting numbers, weekend #11

Denis Demers

It is an almost perfect start to the season for the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, with already 20 victories for the troop led by Jean-François Houle! Find out why Jonathan Huberdeau, Samuel Carrier, Martin Lefebvre and Etienne Marcoux are about to find their place in the history of the League. Dmitri Jaskin had an extraordinary month of November in offensive!

TEAMS AT FULL THROTTLE

  • Blainville-Boisbriand – this team has had an incredible first third of the season: 42 points in the standings (2nd behind Halifax - 43 points), goals against average (2.28 | 1st), goals for average (4.31 | 1st), shorthanded (88.3% | 1st), the only team of the League which has already won 10 times on the road… more recently, the Armada has just won its last 7 consecutive games. The team will visit tonight the Baie-Comeau Drakkar, undefeated in regular time for its last 8 games at home. The franchise record (SNL/MTL/BLB) is 8 straight victories (Montreal Junior, 2010-2011 season). See the record…

  • Chicoutimi – with 8 victories during its last 10 games, the Saguenéens will try to extend their sequence to 5 consecutive wins, as they pay a visit to the Halifax Mooseheads on Friday. The club from Chicoutimi has played 13 games where the difference in the score was only one goal, bringing its performance, under such circumstances, to 7-3-2-1. After amassing at least one point in the last 10 games, it makes it one of the best performances in the League.
  • Halifax – the Mooseheads won their last 12 home games and are gradually approaching the team’s record of 15. So far, during its 13 home games, the troop led by Dominique Ducharme exploded 8 times with games of 5 goals or more!
  • Saint John – Mike Kelly, the new head coach, seems to have found the recipe to revive the Sea Dogs. Their record is now 14 wins in 27 games. They just won 4 of their last 5 games, scoring 23 goals and allowing only 15 during this sequence.

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE

  • Anthony Mantha (VDO) – with 2 goals last night, he became the first player to score 25 goals this season.
  • Mikhail Grigorenko (QUE) – scored 12 goals in his last 8 games, which makes him the 2nd best scorer of the League (24). He was Buffalo’s (NHL) first round pick in June 2012 and he now ranks 2nd of all scorers in the QMJHL with 44 points, 2 less than Currie (PEI).
  • Jimmy Oligny (PEI) – the Rocket defenseman nags the opponent! He makes solid checks (15 out his last 5 games) and plays intensely (66 penalty minutes in 2012-2013). In addition, he has scored 8 goals out of 42 shots, which earned him a 19% in offensive efficiency, the second best performance among defensemen in the League, just behind Marc-Antoine Carrier (QUE | 21, 6% | 8/37).
  • Samuel Noreau (BAC) – the giant defenseman from the Drakkar has had a very good sequence recently, with 10 points in 12 games and a +2 differential. He significantly contributed to the success of his team in November.

RECORDS

  • Jonathan Huberdeau (SNB) – last night against Val-d’Or, the first of his 3 points was the 252nd in his career with the QMJHL. This officially became a new record for the Sea Dogs, outranking Michael Kirkpatrick’s mark (251). In the same vein, with 106 goals, he is only 6 goals away from the team’s record also held by Kirkpatrick (108).

  • Etienne Marcoux (BLB) – after equaling the franchise record of 55 (J.-F. Bérubé) at the end of last week, he will become the king in the history of the franchise with his next win in front of the Armada’s net. He dominates the QMJHL in 2012-2013, with his goals against average (1.97) and his save percentage (,921)

ACTIVE SEQUENCE

  • Dmitri Jaskin (MON) – 14 consecutive games with at least one point, during which period he has maintained a rate of 2 points per game.
  • Steve Lebel (BAC) – was listed on the score sheet, for either a goal or an assist in each of his last 10 games, while the sequence of of teammate Raphael Bussieres is now 13 consecutive games with 1 point.
  • Francis Beauvillier (RIM) - has scored in each of his last 5 games.

PLATEAU

  • Samuel Carrier (BLB) and Martin Lefebvre (QUE) – what have these two players in common? Yes, they are defensemen... Yes, they both played for the Quebec Remparts in 2008-09 ... Most importantly, these two 20-year-old players have just joined a select club: they are now part of the 'Top 100' of the best play makers in the history of the QMJHL’s defensemen, since they reached the plateau of 120 assists each.

A LITTLE HISTORY

  • Claude Julien (Hull Olympiques) – on Wednesday evening, December 5th at centre Robert-Guertin, the Olympiques organization will pay him the same tribute as Pat Burns in 2004. A banner will be raised, to immortalize his name among the greatest in the history of the franchise. After being Robert Mongrain’s assistant for 2 years, Claude Julien became the head coach for Hull for the 1996-97 to 1999-00 seasons, a period during which he won a President Cup and a Memorial Cup (1997), leading his team to 3 participations in the finals of the QMJHL in 4 years. He then jumped among professionals, among others with the Montreal Canadiens. He experienced his most intense moment as a head coach in the spring of 2011, when his team, the Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup.
