Inside the Numbers for the Semifinals

The quarterfinals were exciting, with lots of twists and turns. Two of the series required a seventh and decisive game. Now it’s just the final four. The semifinal round will feature regular-season champions, the Saint John Sea Dogs up against the Chicoutimi Saguenéens; eighth overall (Nicolas Roy vs. Thomas Chabot – PHOTO). The other match up will be the Charlottetown Islanders, second in terms of points in 2016-17 and the QMJHL’s best offense versus the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, the regular season’s top defensive team (Daniel Sprong vs. Samuel Montembeault – PHOTO). Things promise to be exciting.

Saint John vs Chicoutimi

Recap of the 2016-17 regular season

  • Saint John (48-14-5-1, 102 points, 1st overall) – After winning the regular-season title for the 4th time in their history, the Sea Dogs boasted the league’s best road record in 2016-17, with 23 wins (676).
    • Three of their defensemen have at least 40 points this season: Simon Bourque (56 in 59 GP), Thomas Chabot (45 in 34 GP) and Jakub Zboril (41 in 50 GP). Bokondji Imama impressed the fans with his 41 goals in 66 games.
    • They are a balanced and dominant team at all positions, led by an experienced coach in Danny Flynn, who has just passed 300-win mark in his QMJHL career. Flynn would also like to add his name to the President Cup for a third time, having done it before with Moncton in 2006 and 2010.
    • Including playoffs, the Sea Dogs have won 33 of their 40 games since January 1st for a win percentage of .825; topping Charlottetown’s performance (.775, 31 wins / 40 games)
  • Chicoutimi (38-25-3-2, 81 points, 8th overall) – Their season has turned around since week 4, when the team was last in the standings. Back then, they had a record of only 1 win and 6 losses (.143). On December 1st, after 14 wins in 18 games, they had risen to the middle of the rankings, sitting 8th on the last day of the year; 21 points behind the leaders Sea Dogs. GM and coach Yanick Jean made some advantageous trades, welcoming the Klima brothers, defenseman Olivier Galipeau, as well as scorer and character player, Joey Ratelle (41 goals). Captain Nicolas Roy (80 points in 53 games, +30) couldn’t have asked for better to reinforce the squad and help it go as far as possible in the playoffs.

  • Saint John eliminated Chicoutimi 4 games to 1 in the 2012 semifinals
  • Saint John (8-0) – The Sea Dogs eliminated Rimouski (4-0) and Val-d’Or (4-0, QF) in succession.
    • The Sea Dogs sent 386 shots on goal in their 8 games, while only allowing 140; a ratio of almost 3 to 1.
    • If Mathieu Joseph (15 points) and Spencer Smallman (8 goals) lead the forwards, defensemen Thomas Chabot (13 points, +13) and Simon Bourque (9 points, diff +11) seem a class apart in terms of leadership.
    • On the PK, the New Brunswickers were close to perfection with a 96.6% (28/29) efficiency … In addition, they scored 4 times when down a man.
    • Mathieu Joseph and Matthew Highmore start the next round on a streak of 8 games with at least a point.

    • Olivier Galipeau saved his team’s season in dramatic fashion last Tuesday, in game 7 against Rouyn-Noranda. He scored 2 goals, including the one that forced overtime, and the game-winning goal in overtime. He already has 3 game winners this post-season. In addition, with 57 QMJHL-playoff games, he is 21st among the league’s all-time defensemen. He will soon be joining his coach, Yanick Jean, who played 60 games on the Saguenéens blue line from 1993 to 1996.
    • Dmitry Zhukenov has 16 points in 11 games in this year’s playoffs. He also boasts a differential of +6, after a bad season at -17.
    • Chicoutimi is participating in the Semifinals for the 14th time (5 series won – 8 lost, .385) They have only made it this far once in the last 10 years (Vs SNB, 2012)
    • They reached the President Cup final on 5 occasions (2 championships, 1991 and 1994).

TRENDS

  • Regular-season champions – For 13 years in a row since spring 2004, the team with the most points in the regular season, has reached the President Cup final. We will see if the Sea Dogs can continue the trend.

RECORDS

  • Thomas Chabot (SNB) – with 29 lifetime assists in the playoffs, he is threatening Nathan Beaulieu’s Sea Dogs franchise record of 36, held since 2015.
  • Daniel Sprong (Charlottetown) – He tops the franchise record book in terms of goals (22), passes (23), points (45). With 34, he also shares with teammate Kameron Kielly, the record for number of games played in the playoffs.

MODERN ERA

  • Daniel Sprong (Charlottetown) – the Islanders superstar is likely to complete a fourth-consecutive year with more points than games played in the playoffs. In 2017, he has so far racked up 14 points in 8 playoff games. This is a far from a trivial feat when you consider that it will be only the 8th time in history that this has been accomplished. Two of these players had 5-consecutive seasons with an average of 1 point or more per game: Jacques Jr Locas (St-Jérôme and Québec, 1970-1974) and Benoit Mondou (Bay -Comeau and Shawinigan, 2002-2006). The others had 4 playoffs with an average of at least one point per game: Denis Cyr, Normand Dupont, Stefan Figliuzzi, Martin Lapointe, Patrice Lefebvre, and now, most likely, Daniel Sprong (Charlottetown).

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Paul Boutillier (SNB) – 35 years ago, the Sea Dogs current assistant coach set a new record for QMJHL Defensemen. He scored at least one point in 25-straight games in the 1981-82 season while playing for the Sherbrooke Beavers. That year, the Beavers won the President Cup. Barely a year later, in 1982-83, Boutillier joined the Islanders of New York with whom he would go on to raise the Stanley Cup. He is a great asset to the current Sea Dogs.
