Grigorenko taken by Sabres and Matteau by Devils in 1st round

Mikhail Grigorenko of the Quebec Remparts was chosen in 12th position during the first round of the National Hockey League’s 2012 Draft by the Buffalo Sabres. Grigorenko played 59 games during the 2011-12 regular season in the QMJHL with 40 goals and 45 assists for a total of 85 points and a +/- of +35. Stefan Matteau, who has already committed to the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada for the 2012-13 season, was selected 29th overall by the New Jersey Devils.

Nail Yakupov of the Sarnia Stings was selected first overall by the Edmonton Oilers. Yakupov played 42 games in the Ontario Hockey League and collected 69 points, including 31 goals during this season. Everett Silvertips’ Ryan Murray was the second overall choice, picked by the Western Hockey League’s Columbus Blue Jackets. The Montreal Canadiens picked Alex Galchenyuk, third overall, of the Sarnia Stings.
