It was a perfect weekend for the Screaming Eagles at Centre 200.
Tyler Hylland went end to end and beat two Victoriaville defensemen on a spectacular rush to give Cape Breton a 3-2 lead at the 7:17 mark of the middle period to give the home team a lead they would not relinquish. The Eagles are now unbeaten in ten straight games in regulation at Centre 200.
It was a former Tigre that started the scoring at the 3:14 mark of the game. Ty Fournier ripped a shot over the shoulder of James Povall in what was actually the first whistle of the game. Just before the eleven minute mark, Phélix Martineau would push the lead to 2-0 with a power play marker. Victoriaville would show some push back though as Pascal Laberge flew up the left wing, won a one on one battle with the defenseman and beat Kyle Jessiman at the 13:18 mark. It appeared the Eagles would still take the lead to into the first intermission but with 45 seconds left in the opening frame, Yannik Bertrand went to the penalty box for tripping and Tigres captain Tristan Pomerleau wired the puck through traffic to knot the game on the man advantage. Hylland’s goal in the second period was the only goal in the remainder of the contest. The Eagles forward began skating in his own zone, picked up speed through the neutral zone, and fired the puck through two Tigre players to put Cape Breton ahead 3-2. Victoriaville pressured and pressured in the third period but couldn’t find the tying goal. The Tigres outshot the Eagles 14-5 and their best chance may have not been a shot on goal at all, when Jimmy Huntington rang the puck off the post in the final three minutes. Tigres coach Louis Robitaille elected to pull his goaltender James Povall with two minutes to play but could not find a tying goal.
Kyle Jessiman stood tall in the Eagles net, stopping 29 shots in the win including a sprawling stop on Maxime Comtois in the second period. Povall allowed three goals on 20 shots.
