Eagles lose 9-6 to Rocket

  A wild third period where the P.E.I. Rocket scored six goals was the difference as they defeated the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 9-6 on Thursday night at the Charlottetown Civic Centre in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

  Jessyko Bernard led the way for the Rocket as he recorded a goal and two assists in the contest. Ben Duffy found the back of the net twice while Yan Pavel Laplante, Matthew Bursey, Olivier Croteau, Josh Currie, Olivier Jodoin and Jimmy Oligny scored single markers for the Rocket who improve to 16-31-2-2 on the season. Jonathan Brunelle recorded two goals and an assist in the loss while Kyle Farrell, Raphaël Corriveau, Alexandre Lavoie and Blake Millman each netted goals for the Screaming Eagles who fall to 20-28-0-2 on the season.

  With the win the Rocket are now on a two game winning streak and also snap the Screaming Eagles two game winning streak which started last Friday against Bathurst.

  The Rocket opened the scoring in the contest as Yan Pavel Laplante scored his sixth goal of the season at the 1:53 mark of the first period, Tomas Pavelka and Matej Beran were given the assists.

  Cape Breton would tie the game up at one as Alexandre Lavoie netted his 16th goal of the season beating Rocket goaltender Maxime Lagacé on the powerplay at 10:00 of the opening period, William Carrier and Jean-Simon Deslauriers added the helpers.

  Just 14 seconds later, Kyle Farrell gave the Screaming Eagles a 2-1 lead as he fired home his eighth goal of the season on the powerplay, Sébastien Payette and Kyle Campbell picked up the assists.

  Jonathan Brunelle would put Cape Breton up 3-1 as he buried his 18th goal of the season at 16:28 of the first period, Kyle Farrell and William Carrier were given credit for the helpers.

  The Rocket would not go away as defenceman Jimmy Oligny scored his fourth goal of the season beating Screaming Eagle goaltender Philippe Trudeau at 19:02 of the opening period, Matej Beran and Jessyko Bernard added the assists.

  With just two seconds remaining in the first period, the Rocket would tie the game up at three as captain Josh Currie netted his 19th goal of the season, Matthew Bursey and Olivier Croteau were awarded with the helpers.

  After a scoreless second period, Jonathan Brunelle gave the Screaming Eagles a 4-3 lead as he scored his second goal of the game (19th of the season) shorthanded just 36 seconds into the third period, Michael Clarke was given the lone assist on the goal.

  Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia's Ben Duffy tied the game up at four for P.E.I. as he found the back of the net for his 29th goal of the season on the powerplay at 1:00 of the final frame, Jessyko Bernard and Matej Beran picked up the helpers.

  The Rocket would take a 5-4 lead just 15 seconds later as Matthew Bursey fired home his seventh goal of the season beating Trudeau, Marc-André Lévesque was given the only assist on the goal.

  Left winger Olivier Croteau gave the Rocket a two goal lead as he netted his 11th goal of the season at 10:24 of the final frame, Tomas Pavelka and Josh Currie recorded the helpers.

  P.E.I. made the score 7-4 as 20 year old Jessyko Bernard scored his 14th goal of the season at the 11:47 mark of the third period, the goal was unassisted.

  Former Screaming Eagle Olivier Jodoin put the Rocket up by four as he scored his fifth goal of the season (first goal as a Rocket) at 14:31 of the third period, Yan Pavel Laplante and Louick Marcotte were given credit for the assists.

  Cape Breton would cut the Rocket lead to three as Alberton, Prince Edward Island's Blake Millman found the back of the net for his second goal of the season at 14:58 of the final frame, Bronson Beaton and Mikael Langlois were awarded with the helpers.

  Raphaël Corriveau pulled the Screaming Eagles within two as he fired home his sixth goal of the season at the 15:23 mark of the third period, Jonathan Brunelle and William Carrier recorded the assists.

  The Rocket would add an empty net goal as Ben Duffy scored his second goal of the game (30th of the season) at 18:49 of the third period, the goal was unassisted.


  Maxime Lagacé made 13 saves before being replaced by Antoine Bibeau who turned aside the only shot he faced in his 4:37 of relief, Lagacé did pick up the win, his record improves to 11-27-2-1 while Philippe Trudeau turned aside 25 of 32 shots before being replaced by William Racicot who allowed one goal on seven shots, Trudeau did pick up the loss in goal, his record falls to 13-16-0-2.

  The Screaming Eagles and Rocket meet again tomorrow night (Friday, February 3rd) at 7:00pm at the Charlottetown Civic Centre. Playing against old teammates: Rocket left winger Olivier Jodoin faced his former teammates for the first time since being picked up off waivers by the P.E.I. Rocket on January 9th from Cape Breton. The 18 year old from Otterburn Park, Quebec recorded a goal while also posting a +1 rating and two hits in the contest on Thursday night. The goal was Jodon's first as a Rocket. The 6-3, 192-pounder  was drafted by the Screaming Eagles at the 2009 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League entry draft in round two (#32 overall).

Gordie Howe hat-trick for Bursey: Right winger Matthew Bursey recorded a Gordie Howe hat-trick for the Rocket on Thursday night. The 18 year old from Saint John, New Brunswick recorded a goal, an assist and a fight in the 9-6 win for P.E.I. .

Final shots on goal: 40-20 in favor of P.E.I. .

Cape Breton went 2/4 on the powerplay while P.E.I. went 3/4.
