A Look Into Training Camp

Sydney - This year, the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles will have a very high paced and entertaining training camp with a lot of battles for positions.

Over the past few months, the Eagles roster has seen some changes and some very strong additions.  In goal, with the addition of Vancouver Canucks-drafted goaltender David Honzik, and current Screaming Eagle Philippe Trudeau, they lead an exciting cast of young goaltenders.  Also coming to camp and looking to knock one of the veterans from their positions will be last year’s drafted goalies, Jacob Fancy and Francis Leonard-Mayer, along with high draft pick, Alex Bureau.  Goaltending is a position where you can never have enough depth and this year’s Cape Breton Screaming Eagles definitely have that.

Up front for the Eagles this year, they will be led by Hockey Canada’s representative at the under-18 world championships William Carrier, along with Cape Breton’s own Kyle Farrell.  With the additions of 3rd overall draft pick Clark Bishop, and highly regarded Slovakian forward Adam Veliky, this year’s Eagles boast some high quality offensive potential.  Other forwards to watch this upcoming season will be Bronson Beaton, who was acquired from the Shawinigan Cataractes in the Morgan Ellis deal.  Look for Cole Murphy, Michael Clarke and Raphael Corriveau to have strong seasons as well. In addition, look for some newly drafted players to make an impact: Zachary Moody, a high pick in this year’s draft, along with last years 3rd round pick Charles Guevremont, will both look to have a strong training camp.  To round out the forward positions, we should have a very interesting battle for the last 20 year old position.  Alexandre Lavoie, Cory Macintosh, Simon Darveau and Danny Potvin will all be looking to crack this years roster and will add some very important leadership and skill to a youthful team.

On the back end, our defensive group will have a new look with newly added, 20-year-old defenseman Jonathan Oligny, and Memorial Cup winner and Phoenix Coyote prospect Justin Hache.  Rounding out the defensive core will be New York Islanders prospect Loic Leduc and veteran Stephen Woodworth.  Look for young and highly touted Jean-Simon Deslauriers and Simon Desmarais to add depth to an already impressive core of defensemen.

Training camp will open up on August 13, 2012 at Cape Breton University and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles home opener is on September 21st against the Halifax Mooseheads.
